The Ceramics Area welcomes both functional and sculptural approaches to the art form. Courses at all levels in this concentration develop an understanding of ceramic history as well as an appreciation for contemporary works. Students are taught handbuilding in addition to wheel-throwing skills and are encouraged to use these techniques to develop their own artistic expressions. Students are able to participate in the many aspects of ceramic arts, from mixing clay, to glazing, to firing their works. Visiting artists, critiques, workshops, and exhibition opportunities all help students develop their skills through a variety of feedback venues. The faculty is made up of active artists who are committed to teaching. Classes are small, with an emphasis on individual feedback and workshops.
